How to Choose a Photo for Memorial Slate Engraving
A custom laser-engraved memorial slate can turn a meaningful photograph into a lasting tribute. The most important starting point is the photo itself: clear features, thoughtful framing, and a design that fits the engraving surface. Here is how to prepare a memorial photo engraving request before asking for an estimate.
1. Start with the clearest original photograph available
Choose a photograph in which the person or pet is recognizable, with eyes, facial features, and other important details in reasonable focus. An original digital photo is generally more useful than a screenshot of that same image because screenshots may shrink or compress details. If you only have a printed photograph, a careful scan or a well-lit, straight-on picture of the print may give us a better starting point than a blurry phone image.
You do not need a professional portrait. Natural photographs can work well when the subject is clear. If you are choosing between several images, send alternatives so we can review which translates best to the selected slate size and engraving method.
2. Think about lighting, contrast, and backgrounds
Very dark faces, strong shadows across the eyes, bright highlights, or busy backgrounds can make a picture more challenging to engrave. A photograph with even lighting and some separation between the subject and the background is often easier to interpret. Black-and-white laser engraving does not reproduce every photographic shade in the same way as a color print: the result depends on the slate surface, engraving settings, image preparation, and original picture.
Don’t edit the photograph heavily before sending it. Beauty filters, dramatic sharpening, and repeated screenshot compression can remove details we need for a natural likeness. If you already have an edited version, send the original too.
3. Decide what the memorial should include
Many families want more than a photograph. Decide whether your custom tribute should contain:
- The person’s or pet’s name, nickname, or preferred form of address
- Dates, an anniversary, or a short memorial message
- A simple decorative border, flowers, or another meaningful design element
- One portrait, a couple’s photograph, or multiple subjects
- A landscape or portrait layout based on the chosen plaque size
Short wording is often easier to read than an entire paragraph on a small engraved piece. Please double-check names and dates when submitting them. For sensitive or private memorial details, tell us what information you are comfortable sharing as part of the order.
4. Match the artwork to the slate size
The size and shape of the memorial plaque affect the amount of detail that can fit on it. A close portrait usually allows more room for facial details than a wide group photo reduced to the same area. If the photograph shows several people, identify who should be included and how the image may be cropped. We can review whether the requested lettering, portrait, and decorations will fit before confirming the layout.
5. Ask about a design proof and project-specific estimate
For a custom memorial, communicate your preferred photograph, exact wording, material, size, and timeline. A design proof may help confirm the composition and spelling before engraving. Any image adjustments and proof process depend on the project; a requested design may need revisions if the source photo is too dark, blurred, or low-resolution.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use an older printed photograph?
Yes, you can send a clear scan or image for review. Results depend on the original print’s condition and the amount of useful detail remaining. We assess suitability before quoting.
Can I send a photo with a busy background?
Yes. Tell us which person or subject matters most. We can discuss composition and whether background simplification would be appropriate, without promising recovery of details that are missing in the original image.
Can I include a personal quote or religious wording?
You can request personal wording and decorative elements. Provide the exact text and indicate any size or placement preferences; we will discuss layout, length, and compatibility with your piece.
Can memorial slates be shipped to other states?
Eligible finished memorial products can be shipped nationwide after we confirm packaging, destination, price, and timing. Include your delivery ZIP code when requesting a quote.
